Joe Frank Online Show "Bottle for a Headstone" - play time: 56:00 - Joe Frank Comic Monologues
Joe defends himself against a rich woman's charges of personal violation, loses his long-time girlfriend because of his serial infidelities, and engages a porn star prostitute known for her highly academic and philosophical adult films; a Jewish altar boy, violated by a priest, joins a motorcycle gang, becomes a professional mime and is visited by a beautiful stranger. Joe cunningly seduces a woman abandoned by her husband and then finds himself unable to escape her world. Created in collaboration with David Rapkin.

Rare early Joe Frank stories from NPR Playhouse:

"Caldwell" (and his out-of-body experience)
"Long Island Memories," and
"Beautiful Woman on Elevator"

Joe Frank Online Show: "Duplicity" - play time: 56:48 - Joe Frank Monologues
A man, finding himself unable to make love to a woman he's picked up at a party, wonders how to address his increasingly embarrassing and humiliating situation and nostalgically recalls the most passionate relationship of his life. An unhappy and lonely associate professor of theoretical physics trapped in a debased and shameful ménage, awakens from a terrifying dream and summons the strength to embark on a new life. A former soldier, revealed to have been a coward, is drummed out of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and returns home to find that his wife has abandoned him. A rabbi, a priest and a hyena meet a pair of girl scouts on a train to Duplicity. Standing on a corner, a panhandler disdainfully berates drivers who fail to give him money. Created in collaboration with David Rapkin.

Joe Frank Band Rehearsal
Here's a Joe Frank treasure we had no idea existed. We knew that in 1998 Joe assembled a band to accompany him during several live performances. What we just discovered, however, is a studio recording of Joe and his band's rehearsal. We've encoded the entire uncut 90 minutes of this rehearsal with musicians Mike Boydo, David Brown, Smoky Hormel, Danny Frankel, Kenny Lyons, Dave Rolicky, and Joey Waronker

After sketching out a musical composition for his live show, Joe went to work with these musicians and produced what we believe is some of the best signature Joe Frank music we've ever heard. Completely original, thoroughly Joe, these recordings definitely satisfy. Enjoy full, unedited tracks. You can actually hear Joe directing, the band jamming, and Joe delivering portions of monologues from past shows. ("Lies," "Either/Or" and "Just Hold Me.") We're very excited to bring you this rare sampling of Joe Frank.

October 2004 Sign up to Listen - Oct 2004

Joe Frank Online Show: "Time's Arrow" - play time: 59:05 - Joe Frank and Larry Block Monologues and Dialogues
Joe tells the story of a series of interconnected dreams of a Palestinian suicide bomber, an Israeli immigrant soldier, and a Mississippi minister on the morning of his doomed journey to Jerusalem. Joe speaks of the irresistible and, at the same time, relative nature of time. Larry Block and Joe engage in a comic discussion of the truth underlying suicide hotlines. Larry describes his life of waiting for the right moment to act, only to find that he's gone beyond the point of no return; Larry describes a beautiful fall day in which he experienced a profound sense of hope and optimism before sinking into gluttonous despair and then tells the story of his emotional and ludicrous visit to the grave of his dead father. Created in collaboration with David Rapkin.

"Live at Market Street" - play time: 56:10 - the audio of a Joe Frank live performance from Santa Monica 1988.
