1995 Somewhere Out There
Joe is approached by a woman on the street who asks, "Would you like to come up to my apartment for a drink and some sex? I'm not very expensive, and I'm an excellent typist." They engage in a tawdry encounter, after which we listen to her dream which reveals her spiritual longing. Then Joe dictates a letter to her before attending the funeral of his Uncle Murray. Murray receives a grandiose eulogy accompanied by Joe's recollection of the real, flawed man. Joe considers the whereabouts and nature of God and questions His compassion and care. A self-proclaimed mystic offers to bring back the dead to a woman who declines ("spirits is the Devil's work"). Later, he prays together with another man before requiring him to repeat absurd declarations of love. We hear Dial-a-Prayers from pastors around the country. A woman describes her rare, moving experience of bliss.
