I just love listening to Larry Block tell stories to Joe. This is one of his more interesting exchanges; there are lots of them in The Other Side episodes. I was so sad to hear Larry passed away in 2012. You feel like you got to know him first as a character in Joe’s early work and then more personally when he shared his life stories as was the case in this episode. This was reality entertainment way before it became mainstream. And I never felt like the Larry-Joe conversations were staged or that Larry tried to exaggerate his bad character traits to make the episode more entertaining as is the case with present-day reality TV. This was Larry. You get what you get. And, warts and all, he was a pretty good guy. You can debate whether it was wise for him to smoke marijuana with his son, but you can’t debate his courage to lay it all on the line and let Joe record his personal thoughts and share them with his listeners. I wish I had known him. At least we can enjoy episodes like this one even now that he has gone.
