Joe’s birthday is August 19th. He will have been 87 years old. I remember so many of his birthdays when he would declare: “It’s absurd that I’ve been able to live so long.”
And it was true. Aside from his many surgeries since he was a baby, as an adult Joe survived cancer four times, and had total (and sudden) kidney failure requiring a transplant. In the end, it was sepsis that claimed his life. He fought long and hard to live. I’ve never known anyone with so much determination and love for living – despite how cynical he could appear to be in his programs.
August 19, 2017 celebrating his birthday with a few close friends. On the right is Paul Rachman. This was one month after his last cancer diagnosis and less than two months before surgery. (My “helping” him blow out candles is completely unconscious.)
