Product Description
The story of a woman who dates war veterans going back to World War I ends with Joe’s ‘Ode to War.’ Larry Massett talks about covering May Day peace demonstrations as a journalist. Joe is picked up by a hippie wearing bells while hitchhiking across the country. The man argues with a truck driver and they get into a homicidal car chase. Joe contemplates death as literally buying the farm, going fishing, and checking into The Hotel Paradise. Each phrase evokes a promising fantasy that ends in disaster. Joe reads positive, self-help books in a desperate, shouting voice and discusses daily annoyances: messes in public bathrooms, litter in movie theaters, pan-handlers.
