Pledge Drive – The Other Side (August 6, 2000)

From: $6.99

Clear selection

Joe was notorious for transforming a banal fundraising pitch for the radio station into an entertaining show as only he could. Often, Joe would deliver the stories live on air.

This is one from The Other Side –*not available until now* Feb 2019.

Enjoy the first track:

Savings on the Pledge Drives:
Periodically during the show, Joe would pitch the station premiums and urge listeners to call. So, we’ve reduced the prices for pledge drives. Keep in mind: most material in the pledge drive programs is unique, and do not exist in any other shows. Enjoy!

(Note: At the time, Joe had only produced nine shows for the Karma series. The entire series is 18 shows.)

(Live) Joe describes a dream: He bemoans the fundraising success of the hour prior to his show airing – Harry Shearer’s Le Show. As soon as Joe’s show comes on air, callers stop calling.

Larry and Zac Block discuss Nature. Larry talks about his drinking and reads a moving poem he wrote.

Joe discusses life and its challenges, morphing into his reasoning for listeners to donate to his program.

Buddhist Jack Kornfield tells the true story of a woman who meets friends who practice differing religious disciplines. They claim to see her dead husband. A Sufi says her husband is now in the womb for another life. She asks Jack: What happens when you die?

(Live) “Hell-on-earth” sweepstakes. Choice of open sewage or electrical blackouts, operations without anesthetic, tribal dentistry. Taliban tour of Afghanistan for women: “you get to cower in fear; you get to starve a lot.”

A conversation with Larry about Joe’s breakfast. Pancakes and Joe’s preferred syrup: “Is this that low fat, low calorie imitation syrup?” Joe: “No, it’s flown in from Montpelier.” They continue discussing alcohol, medications, psychiatrists.

(Live) Subscribers may wish to subscribe during other programs because they don’t want to be associated with Joe. Describes his hermetic life.

(Live) The story of two rabbis and a priest on a train. Devolves into absurdity.

Excerpt from show: Facilitator speaks to a group: “Not today will I act crazy.”

Larry and Joe conversation about money and Joe paying Larry – how to assess what it is worth it.

(Live) You know what it’s like when a homeless person approaches you at a red light asking for money? Well, here I am, Joe Frank –clothes tattered, hair matted. Standing before you: Please make that pledge.

Jack Kornfield tells a story about a woman grieving the loss of a relationship and stuck.

Joe: Here at the station, we are all measured against each other. Process of natural selection at the radio. The fund drive is Darwinian.
