New in July

“Fire” is a show Joe produced in 2005, based on his live show at the Evidence Room, Los Angeles, in 2004. He wrote the script shortly after he was fired from KCRW in 2002. It was added to the Premium Membership in 2005; however, Joe removed it for a time and granted permission shortly before his passing. A roman à clef, this show is a surreal and fantastical depiction of Joe’s inner struggle after his firing, with other stories. Now available for Members

Cast: Tim Jerome, Tess, Arthur Miller, Richard Eisner, Joe Frank

“Building a Church” – Absurd stories about how churches and cathedrals were once constructed with bizarre tools; stories about a man’s path to becoming a pastor, a woman frightened of her mother, a young man is changed after wandering into a church; Joe tells of tribes worshipping fire, the Apostles, Moses and more. Now available for sale and for Members.

Joe’s Birthday News

Joe’s birthday is August 19th. He will have been 87 years old. I remember so many of his birthdays when he would declare: “It’s absurd that I’ve been able to live so long.”

And it was true. Aside from his many surgeries since he was a baby, as an adult Joe survived cancer four times, and had total (and sudden) kidney failure requiring a transplant. In the end, it was sepsis that claimed his life. He fought long and hard to live. I’ve never known anyone with so much determination and love for living – despite how cynical he could appear to be in his programs.

Joe Birthday 2017

August 19, 2017 celebrating his birthday with a few close friends. On the right is Paul Rachman. This was one month after his last cancer diagnosis and less than two months before surgery. (My “helping” him blow out candles is completely unconscious.)
