Pledge Drive – The Other Side (August 13, 2000)

From: $6.99

Clear selection

Using a variety of strategies, Joe attempts to persuade listeners to contribute to KCRW and his show. Joe was notorious for transforming a banal fundraising pitch for the radio station into an entertaining show as only he could. Often, Joe would deliver the stories live on air. This is one from The Other Side.

Savings on the Pledge Drives:
Periodically during the show, Joe would pitch the station premiums and urge listeners to call. So, we’ve reduced the prices for pledge drives. Keep in mind: most material in the pledge drive programs is unique, and do not exist in any other shows. Enjoy!

(Note: At the time, Joe had only produced nine shows for the Karma series. The entire Karma series is 16 shows.)

Matt Holzman calls the winner of the KCRW sweepstakes for a trip to Maui. The phone call is interrupted by bad news. It descends into chaos. Matt follows up with the winner to find out how the trip went. More chaos.

Joe’s dream: He’s homeless, a vet with a sign “Will Work for Food.” A guy picks him up offering Joe a job. Absurd monologue.

Someone pitches on Joe’s behalf, threatening listeners if they do not pledge.

Joe talks about philanthropy and other public radio personalities; bizarre premiums for people who pledge to Joe’s show; describes the vacation a sweepstakes winner will receive (this cut appears in Best of Monologues Vol 1); instead of an external vacation, take one inside of you.

Another bizarre person pitches on Joe’s behalf.

Joe’s story about a farmer and rabbi who helps him. Joe goes into detail about the moral of the story from the perspective of those involved.

Monologue about Jewish “present new world” stories.

A complaining listener calls in to deliver a diatribe on Joe’s show.

More of Joe urging listeners to pledge.
